Sports for the mind
We, the LEGO Mountaineers, are a group of six girls who are home-educated. Our parents brought us together to participate in the LEGO Robotic League. The purpose of the league is to involve children, ages 9-14, in math, science, robotics, and public speaking.
Each team is given the task of programming a robot using LEGOS and motors. Computers are used to program the robot to complete various assigned challenges. We are scored by the number of challenges we can successfully complete. As you can see in our team picture, we are given a competition mat and a list of obstacles to build from LEGOS. During competition we are not allowed to touch the robot, other than to turn it on, our computer programming must be completed and as perfect as can be by the time of the competition.
In addition to the robot competition, each team is challenged to tackle a problem that a major city might face, and how robotics can be used to solve the problem. The team will appear before a panel of judges and present their solution.
We are also graded on team spirit-of which we have a tremendous amount!
"The FIRST LEGO League is a powerful hands-on approach to teaching children valuable problem solving and critical thinking skills, math, and science concepts. The children are learning to collaborate, both as a team and in small workgroups, to solve complex problems. The robots they build provide immediate feedback and the opportunity to test many designs. The mentors and I are enjoying seeing the learning and progress that has been made in just a few short months" -- Eric Mack, Coach, LEGO MountaineersWould you like to join a Frazier Mountain LEGO League? HI MRS. DANTZLER!!!!!!!!!!!
Sports for the mind (Lucia Dantzler) 2Just wanted you to know that I have read, enjoyed, and learned from some of your many entries. Your team sounds so excited about this mission. I wish you much success!
By the way, I am a middle school teacher in Summerville, south Carolina. I am coaching two teams for the first time. I am MORE than overwhelmed!! I do have two wonderful parents helping me so much.
Without them, we would not make it.
Good luck in the competition.
